NATURE’S Incredible TECHNOLOGY AT WORK

Dear friend,
The technical marvels that our
scientists have invented have indeed made us proud of our mental ability and
intelligence that we are empowered with. As I try to understand more and more
about the secrets of nature, I’m amazed by the volume of its knowledge
treasure! Today most of the scientists speak in terms of Nano- technology.
Nano-technology aims at three things: 1.
Miniature size of the machine, 2. Least power consumption, 3.
Bio-degradability.
All of us know that the
well coordinated movements of our body are due to the electric signals
generated from the brain that pass through the nerves to the muscles. This
applies to all animals, birds, fish and insects. But what about single celled
organisms like bacteria? How do they move? Where is their brain or the nervous
system?
The movement of a flagellated
bacterium is nature's version of the electric motor. It is found in the
membrane of many bacterial species and turns a propeller-like structure called
a flagellum, enabling the bacterium to swim. The motor is 45 nanometres in
diameter, made out of thousands of proteins and can rotate at speeds in excess
of 30,000 rpm with efficiency close to 100%.
Scientists have synthesised the whole
device in the lab. And it works! A single celled bacteria that evolved on this
earth four billion years ago, has perfected a nano machine!
With all brainpower and machineries we,
in fact, cannot compare ourselves with nature’s marvellous work.
Dear friend, it is time to celebrate! The hand-painted Wildlife Message Cards have completed 30 years, crossed sixty thousand mark and found their place in Limca Book of Records. I thank you for encouraging and supporting me by spreading the wildlife conservation messages to every nook and corner of the world, which alone, I could not have accomplished.
Over a period of these three decades, I might have painted more than 480 species of animals, birds and butterflies. For various reasons, I do not have all of them in my assemblage. I am sure that some of you still have them in your collection. I request you to please mail me the scanned copies of those wildlife message cards that you have received.
Let us join hands to make our only Earth, a place where all elements of life can live in health, happiness and harmony.

Roller (Coracias
benghalensis) This pigeon
sized bird usually seen perched on a dry stump of a tree, has a big head, heavy
bill, and a striking light and dark blue on the wings very conspicuous as brilliant
bands in flight. It is the State bird of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Lives
near cultivations and is highly beneficial to farmers as it voraciously
consumes insects. Known for its spectacular courtship display, rolling,
twisting and nose-diving in the air!

ಪ್ರಕೃತಿ ಆವಿಷ್ಕರಿಸಿದ ಅದ್ಭುತ ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನ

ಮಿತ್ರರೆ,
ನಿಸರ್ಗದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುವ ವಿದ್ಯಮಾನಗಳ ಒಳಗುಟ್ಟುಗಳನ್ನು ಅರಿತುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾ ಹೋದರೆ ಪ್ರತಿ ಕ್ಷಣ ಹೊಸ ಹೊಸ ವಿಚಾರಗಳು ಮನದಟ್ಟಾಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಈ ವಿಚಾರಗಳು ವರ್ತಮಾನದ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನಿಗಳನ್ನು ದಂಗುಪಡಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯ ಜ್ಞಾನಭಂಡಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಕೊನೆ ಮೊದಲಿಲ್ಲ.
ಇತ್ತೀಚಿನ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನಿಗಳು ತಮ್ಮ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಆವಿಷ್ಕಾರಗಳಲ್ಲೂ ನ್ಯಾನೋ ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನವನ್ನು ಬಳಸತೊಡಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಒಂದು ಮೀಟರಿನ ೧೦-೯ , ಅಂದರೆ ನೂರು ಕೋಟಿಯ ಒಂದು ಭಾಗವೇ ಒಂದು ನ್ಯಾನೋಮೀಟರ್. ಇದು ನಮ್ಮ ಅರಿವಿಗೂ ಮೀರಿದ ಸಣ್ಣ ಪ್ರಮಾಣದ ಗಾತ್ರ! ಅಷ್ಟು ಸಣ್ಣ ಸ್ಥಳದಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾವುದಾದರೂ ಯಂತ್ರವನ್ನು ಊಹಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವೆ?
ನ್ಯಾನೊ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಮೂರು ಗುರಿಗಳು ಇವೆ - ೧. ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸಣ್ಣ ಗಾತ್ರ, ೨. ಕನಿಷ್ಟ ವಿದ್ಯುತ್ ಬಳಕೆ, ೩. ಶೀಘ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಣ್ಣಾಗುವ ಗುಣ.
ನಾವು ಪ್ರತಿದಿನ ಚಲಿಸುವಾಗ ಮೆದುಳು ವಿದ್ಯುತ್ ಸಂಜ್ಞೆಗಳನ್ನು ನರಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ಸ್ನಾಯುಗಳಿಗೆ ಕಳುಹಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಸ್ನಾಯುಗಳು ಸಂಕುಚಿತಗೊಂಡು ದೇಹದ ಅಂಗಾಂಗಗಳು ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥಿತ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಚಲಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ಇದನ್ನು ಪ್ರಾಣಿ, ಪಕ್ಷಿ, ಜಲಚರಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಕೀಟಗಳಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಕಾಣುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಆದರೆ ಏಕಾಣುಜೀವಿಯಾದ ಒಂದು ಬ್ಯಾಕ್ಟೀರಿಯಾಗೆ ಮೆದುಳು ಎಲ್ಲಿದೆ? ಅದು ಚಲಿಸುವುದು ಹೇಗೆ? ಈ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಸಂಶೋಧನೆ ನಡೆದಿದೆ. ಕಶಾಂಗಗಳುಳ್ಳ ಬ್ಯಾಕ್ಟೀರಿಯಾಗೆ ಕಶಾಂಗದ ತುದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಸಂವೇದನಾಶೀಲ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮಗ್ರಾಹಿ ಮತ್ತು ಅದರ ಬುಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ವಿಶೇಷವಾದ ಸಂಕೀರ್ಣ ಪ್ರೋಟೀನ್ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆ ಇದೆ. ಈ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯ ಮೂಲಕ ಕನಿಷ್ಟ ವಿದ್ಯುತ್ ಹಾಯಿಸಿದಾಗ ಕಶಾಂಗ ಗಿರ್ರನೆ ತಿರುಗುತ್ತದೆ, ಅದು ಕೂಡ ಸೆಕೆಂಡಿಗೆ ಐನೂರು ಸಲ! ಈ ಕಶಾಂಗಗಳ ಒಟ್ಟಾರೆ ಸುತ್ತುವಿಕೆಯಿಂದ ಬ್ಯಾಕ್ಟೀರಿಯಾ ನಿರ್ದಿಷ್ಟ ದಿಕ್ಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಚಲಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಒಟ್ಟು ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯ ಗಾತ್ರ ೪೫ ನ್ಯಾನೋಮೀಟರ್‌ಗಳು! ಪ್ರಯೋಗ ಶಾಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ಪ್ರೋಟೀನ್ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯನ್ನು ಪುನರ್ನಿರ್ಮಾಣ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ವಿದ್ಯುತ್ ಹಾಯಿಸಿದಾಗ ಈ ಮೋಟರ್ ತಿರುಗುತ್ತದೆ!
ಬ್ಯಾಕ್ಟೀರಿಯಾಗಳು ಭೂಮಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ವಿಕಾಸ ಹೊಂದಿ ನಾನೂರು ಕೋಟಿ ವರ್ಷಗಳಾಗಿವೆ. ಆ ಕಾಲಘಟ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಅವು ನ್ಯಾನೋ ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನವನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿದ್ದವು ಅಂದರೆ ನಂಬಲೂ ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ. ಹುಲುಮಾನವರಾದ ನಾವು ನಿಸರ್ಗದ ರಚನಾತ್ಮಕ ಪ್ರತಿಭೆಗೆ ಸರಿಸಾಟಿಯೇ ಅಲ್ಲ ಅನಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲವೆ?
ಮಿತ್ರರೆ, ನಿಜಕ್ಕೂ ಇದು ನಾವೆಲ್ಲ ಸಂಭ್ರಮಿಸುವ ಸಮಯ! ಏಕೆಂದರೆ, ವನ್ಯಜೀವಿ ಸಂದೇಶ ಪತ್ರಗಳಿಗೆ ಮೂವತ್ತು ವರ್ಷ ತುಂಬಿದೆ. ಈ ಸುದೀರ್ಘ ಅವಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅರವತ್ತು ಸಾವಿರಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಪತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ಪ್ರಪಂಚದ ಎಲ್ಲೆಡೆ ಹರಡುವ ಕಾರ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ನೀವೆಲ್ಲ ಕೈ ಜೋಡಿಸಿದ್ದೀರಿ. ಈ ಸಾಧನೆಯನ್ನು ಲಿಮ್ಕಾ ದಾಖಲೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲಿ ನಮೂದಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಖಂಡಿತವಾಗಿ ನನ್ನೊಬ್ಬನಿಂದಲೇ ಅಸಾಧ್ಯವಾದ ಕೆಲಸವಿದು.
ಕಳೆದ ಮೂರು ದಶಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಾನು ಸುಮಾರು ೪೮೦ ಪ್ರಾಣಿ-ಕ್ಷಿ-ಪತಂಗಗಳ ಚಿತ್ರ ಬಿಡಿಸಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಕಾರಣಾಂತರಗಳಿಂದ ಅವೆಲ್ಲವೂ ನನ್ನ ಸಂಗ್ರಹದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಅವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲವು ನಿಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿರಬಹುದೆಂದು ಭಾವಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ. ದಯವಿಟ್ಟು ಅವುಗಳ ನೆರಳಚ್ಚನ್ನು ಮಿಂಚಂಚೆಯ ಮೂಲಕ ನನಗೆ ಕಳುಹಿಸಬೇಕೆಂದು ನಿಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ಕಳಕಳಿಯಿಂದ ವಿನಂತಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತೇನೆ.
ಬನ್ನಿ, ನಾವೆಲ್ಲ ಕೈಗೂಡಿಸೋಣ. ಜಗತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಜೀವದ ಪ್ರತಿ ಅಣುಅಣುವೂ ಸುಖದಿಂದ, ಶಾಂತಿಯಿಂದ, ಸಹಬಾಳ್ವೆ ನಡೆಸುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡೋಣ.

ನೀಲಕಂಠ: ಇದು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ರಾಜ್ಯ ಹಕ್ಕಿ. ಒಂಟಿಯಾಗಿ ಮರದ ಬೊಡ್ಡೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಕುಳಿತಿರುವಾಗ ಅನಾಕರ್ಷಕವಾಗಿ ಕಂಡರೂ ಒಂದು ಸಾರಿ ಹಾರಲು ಎದ್ದರೆ ಫಕ್ಕನೆ ಕಾಣುವ ಉಜ್ವಲವಾದ ತಿಳಿನೀಲಿ-ಕಡುನೀಲಿ ಬಣ್ಣದ ರೆಕ್ಕೆಗಳು ಮನಮೋಹಕ. ಕೀಟ ಭಕ್ಷಕನಾದ್ದರಿಂದ ರೈತನ ಆಪ್ತಮಿತ್ರ. ಸಂಗಾತಿಯನ್ನು ಆಕರ್ಷಿಸಲು ಆಗಸದಲ್ಲಿ ಗಿರಕಿ ಹೊಡೆಯುತ್ತಾ ಧೊಪ್ಪನೆ ಬೀಳುವ ದೃಶ್ಯ ಅತ್ಯಾಕರ್ಷಕ. ಮರದ ಅಥವಾ ಗೋಡೆಯ ರಂಧ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಗೂಡು ಕಟ್ಟುತ್ತದೆ,
