Why Should We Save Our Planet

Dear friend,

Over the years we have heard catchphrases like Save Earth, Preserve Nature, and Conserve Environment …, which has become a cluster of slogans on platforms. After all, why have we to save our planet or for whom? After much thought, I have found three reasons:

First of all, animals and plants do not actually know what is happening around them. They do not have the ability to think nor analyse. Intelligent thoughts and predictability are the virtues that belong to only us, the humans. So only we are able to save the poor life forms.

There is another and more important reason: It is we who have to be blamed for all the havocs that have been caused to the Earth and its environs. We have caused an irreversible damage to all the habitats - land, water and air. Don’t you think, logically we are duty bound to correct the wreckage and it is our responsibility?

Lastly, I have the most important reason: I think it is for our own existence we have to save earth. It is because, such catastrophes have occurred more than four times on Earth, and each time Nature has recovered very quickly in a matter of some decades, as if nothing happened at all! And the evolutionary process has not stopped at any time and has continued unimpeded.

This means, nobody needs to preserve or protect Nature. Nature has the inherent capacity to heal itself.

With our massive population, our own changed food habits, sedentary lifestyle and fast mobility and least resistance to new diseases, we are the most vulnerable living being on this Earth. So naturally it is we who are bound to get extinct in the first place. Do we have any solution for this?

The tragic part is, the other species of our genera, Homo erectus, H. habilis, H. neantherthalis, H. naledi are all extinct. This means, we do not have any near cousins in the evolutionary ladder. We are alone!

Let us join hands to make our only Earth, a place where all elements of life can live in health, happiness and harmony.

Special Wildlife Messenger of This Year

Bronze-winged Jaçana (Metopedius indicus) is a swamp bird easily recognized by glossy black head, neck and chest with glistening metallic bronze-green back and wings and a conspicuous broad white eyebrow. The most striking feature is the presence of long legs with massive elongated, widely spread toes that distribute the weight of the bird and enables it to walk effortlessly on the floating vegetation. They are seen in small parties on tanks with floating vegetation like water lily warily moving slowly and silently and are good swimmers. Their food consists of aquatic seeds, tubers, also insects, crustaceans and mollusks. They have a loud, wheezy piping seek..eek.. seek.. eek.. especially during breeding. And the nest is made of a pad of weed stems on floating leaves.

ಭೂಮಿಯನ್ನು ನಾವೇಕೆ ಸಂರಕ್ಷಿಸಬೇಕು

ಮಿತ್ರರೆ,

ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯನ್ನು ಸಂರಕ್ಷಿಸಬೇಕು, ಭೂಮಿಯನ್ನು ಕಾಪಾಡೋಣ, ಪರಿಸರವನ್ನು ಉಳಿಸುವುದು ನಮ್ಮ ಕರ್ತವ್ಯ ... ಹೀಗೆಲ್ಲ ಪ್ರತಿದಿನ ವೇದಿಕೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಮಾತನಾಡುವುದು ಈಗೀಗ ಫ್ಯಾಷನ್ ಆಗಿಬಿಟ್ಟಿದೆ. ಅಷ್ಟಕ್ಕೂ ನಿಸರ್ಗವನ್ನು ನಾವೇ ಏಕೆ ರಕ್ಷಿಸಬೇಕು? ಇದರಿಂದ ಯಾರಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಯೋಜನ ಎಂದು ನಾನು ಆಲೋಚಿಸಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ನನಗೆ ಕಂಡ ಕಾರಣಗಳು ಹೀಗಿವೆ:

ಮೊದಲನೆಯದಾಗಿ, ಪ್ರಾಣಿ-ಪಕ್ಷಿಗಳಿಗೆ, ಗಿಡ-ಮರ-ಬಳ್ಳಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಆಲೋಚಿಸುವ ಶಕ್ತಿಯಿಲ್ಲ; ವಿವೇಚನಾ ಶಕ್ತಿಯಿಲ್ಲ. ಇವೆಲ್ಲ ಇರುವುದು ಬುದ್ಧಿವಂತರಾದ ನಮಗೆ, ಅಂದರೆ ಮನುಷ್ಯರಿಗೆ, ಮಾತ್ರ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಮಾನವರಾದ ನಾವು ಈ ಭೂಮಿ ಮತ್ತು ಅದರ ಅಸಹಾಯಕ ಜೀವಸಂಕುಲವನ್ನು ಉಳಿಸಲು ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯನ್ನು ಸಂರಕ್ಷಿಸಬೇಕು ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಒಪ್ಪತಕ್ಕ ವಿಷಯ.

ಅದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಮುಖ್ಯವಾದ ಕಾರಣ ಮತ್ತೊಂದಿದೆ. ಈ ಭೂಮಿಯ ಮೇಲಿನ ಪರಿಸರ ಹಾಳಾಗಿರುವುದು ಮತ್ತು ಅದು ಹಾಗಾಗಲು ಮುಖ್ಯ ಕಾರಣ ಮನುಷ್ಯರೇ. ನೂರಾರು ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಂದ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ನಾವು ಮಾಡಿರುವ ಅವ್ಯಾಹತ ದುರಾಚಾರಗಳಿಂದ, ನಮ್ಮ ಸ್ವಾರ್ಥ, ದುರಾಸೆ ಮತ್ತು ಕ್ರೌರ್ಯಗಳಿಗೆ ಭೂಮಿ ಹದಗೆಟ್ಟಿದೆ; ದಿಕ್ಕುತಪ್ಪಿದೆ; ನೆಲ, ಜಲ, ವಾಯು ಮಾಲಿನ್ಯ ಹೆಚ್ಚುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಅದನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ಸರಿಗಟ್ಟಬೇಕಾಗಿರುವುದು ನಾವಲ್ಲದೆ ಮತ್ಯಾರು? ಅದು ನಮ್ಮ ಕರ್ತವ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿ ಕೂಡ ಅಲ್ಲವೆ?

ಆದರೆ ಇವೆಲ್ಲಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಮಿಗಿಲಾದ ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಕಾರಣವಿದೆ: ಈವತ್ತು ನಾವು ಭೂಮಿ-ಪರಿಸರ-ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯನ್ನು ಕಾಪಾಡಬೇಕಾಗಿರುವುದು ಬೇರೆ ಯಾವ ಕಾರಣಕ್ಕೂ ಅಲ್ಲ. ಅದು ನಮ್ಮ ಸ್ವಂತ ಉಳಿವಿಗಾಗಿಯೇ! ಏಕೆಂದರೆ, ಈ ಹಿಂದೆಯೂ ಭೂಮಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ನಾಲ್ಕು ಬಾರಿ ಭಾರಿ ಪ್ರಮಾಣದ ಪ್ರಳಯಗಳಾಗಿವೆ. ಹೀಗೆ ಆದಾಗಲೆಲ್ಲ ಅಸಂಖ್ಯ ಜೀವಿಗಳು ನಶಿಸಿಹೋಗಿವೆ. ಆದರೆ ಕೆಲವೇ ದಶಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಏನೂ ಆಗಿಲ್ಲವೇನೋ ಎಂಬಂತೆ ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ಹಿಂದಿರುಗಿದೆ. ಜೀವವಿಕಾಸದ ಪ್ರಕ್ರಿಯೆ ಯಾವ ಹಂತದಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ನಿಂತಿಲ್ಲ. ಇದರ ಅರ್ಥ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯನ್ನು ಯಾರೂ ಸಂರಕ್ಷಿಸಬೇಕಿಲ್ಲ; ನಿಸರ್ಗದ ರಕ್ಷಣೆಯ ಮಾರ್ಗ ಅದಕ್ಕೇ ಗೊತ್ತಿದೆ ಮತ್ತು ತನ್ನನ್ನು ತಾನು ರಕ್ಷಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬಲ್ಲದು ಎಂದಾಯಿತು.

ಮಾನವನ ಜೊತೆಯಲ್ಲೇ ಈ ಭೂಮಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ವಿಕಾಸ ಹೊಂದಿದ ಇತರ ಯಾವ ಮಾನವ ಪ್ರಬೇಧಗಳೂ ಈವತ್ತು ನಮ್ಮೊಂದಿಗೆ ಜೀವಿಸುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ನಮ್ಮ ಹತ್ತಿರದ ದಾಯಾದಿಗಳು ಯಾರೂ ಇಲ್ಲವಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಇಡೀ ಭೂಮಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ನಾವು ಇಂದು ಒಂಟಿಯಾಗಿಬಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಬಹು ದೂರದ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಗಳು ಯಾರಾದರೂ ಇದ್ದರೆ ಅದು ಚಿಂಪಾಂಜಿ, ಗೊರಿಲ್ಲ, ಗಿಬ್ಬನ್‌ಗಳು ಮಾತ್ರ! 

ಭೂಮಿಗೇ ಭಾರವಾಗುತ್ತಿರುವ ನಮ್ಮ ಜನಸಂಖ್ಯೆ, ನಮ್ಮ ಆರಾಮಕರ ಜೀವನ ಶೈಲಿ, ಆಹಾರ ಪದ್ಧತಿ, ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರವಾಗಿ ಬದಲಾಗುತ್ತಿರುವ ನಮ್ಮ ಜೀವನ ಪದ್ಧತಿಗಳು, ಇಂತಹ ಎಲ್ಲ ಬದಲಾವಣೆಗಳಿಂದ ನಮ್ಮ ರೋಗನಿರೋಧಕ ಶಕ್ತಿಯೂ ಕುಂಠಿತಗೊಂಡಿದೆ. ನಾವಿಂದು ಪ್ರಪಂಚದಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ದುರ್ಬಲ ಜೀವಿಗಳಾಗಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ವಿನಾಶ ಹೊಂದುತ್ತಿರುವ ಜೀವಿಗಳ ಪಟ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಾವೇ ಮೊದಲಿಗರಾಗಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಈ ವಿಷವರ್ತುಲದಿಂದ ಹೊರಬರಲು ಮಾರ್ಗವಿದೆಯೇ?

ಬನ್ನಿ, ನಾವೆಲ್ಲ ಕೈಗೂಡಿಸೋಣ. ಜಗತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಜೀವದ ಪ್ರತಿ ಅಣುಅಣುವೂ ಸುಖದಿಂದ, ಶಾಂತಿಯಿಂದ, ಸಹಬಾಳ್ವೆ ನಡೆಸುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡೋಣ.

ಈ ವರ್ಷದ ವಿಶೇಷ ವನ್ಯಜೀವಿ ಸಂದೇಶವಾಹಕ

ಬಿಳಿಹುಬ್ಬಿನ ದೇವನಕ್ಕಿ: ಜೊಂಡು, ಕೊಳದಾವರೆ ಮುಂತಾದ ಜಲಸಸ್ಯಗಳಿಂದಾವೃತವಾದ ಜೌಗು-ಹೂಳು ಪ್ರದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸುವ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸುಂದರವಾದ ಹಕ್ಕಿ. ಹೊಳೆಯುವ ಕಂಚು-ಹಸಿರು ರೆಕ್ಕೆಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಕಣ್ಣಿನ ಮೇಲೆ ಅಗಲವಾದ ಬಿಳಿ ಹುಬ್ಬು, ಹಕ್ಕಿಯನ್ನು ಗುರುತು ಹಿಡಿಯಲು ಇಷ್ಟೇ ಸಾಕು! ಎಲ್ಲಕ್ಕಿಂತ ವಿಶೇಷವಾಗಿ ದೇವನಕ್ಕಿಗಳ ಕಾಲ್ಬೆರಳುಗಳು ಜೇಡರ ಹುಳುವಿಗಿರುವಂತೆ ಉದ್ದ ಹಾಗೂ ಸಪೂರ. ಇದರಿಂದ ನಡೆಯುವಾಗ ದೇಹದ ಭಾರ ಇವುಗಳ ಉದ್ದ-ಬಲಿಷ್ಠ ಕಾಲು ಹಾಗೂ ಬೆರಳುಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಹಂಚಿಹೋಗುವುದರಿಂದ ಕೊಳದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳೆದ ತಾವರೆ ಮುಂತಾದ ಜಲಸಸ್ಯಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ನಿರಾಯಾಸವಾಗಿ ಓಡಾಡುತ್ತವೆ. ಗಾತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ತುಸು ದೊಡ್ಡದಾದ ಹೆಣ್ಣು ಹಕ್ಕಿ ಬಹುಪತಿತ್ವವನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಆಪತ್ತಿನ ಸೂಚನೆ ಕಂಡುಬಂದರೂ ಓಡಿ ಜೊಂಡುಹುಲ್ಲಿನ ನಡುವೆ ಅವಿತುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತವೆ. ಸದ್ದಿಲ್ಲದೆ, ಸಣ್ಣ ಗುಂಪಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಧಾನವಾಗಿ ಚಲಿಸುತ್ತ ಆಹಾರವನ್ನು ಅರಸುತ್ತವೆ. ಗೆಡ್ಡೆ-ಬೀಜ, ಕೀಟ-ಮೃದ್ವಂಗಿಗಳೇ ಇವುಗಳ ಆಹಾರ. ಇವುಗಳ ಕೂಗು ಕೊಳವೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಊದಿದಂತೆ ಸೀಕ್..ಈಕ್.. ಸೀಕ್.. ಈಕ್... ಶಬ್ದ. ಇವು ನೀರಿನ ಮೇಲೆ ಅಥವಾ ಕೆರೆ ಬದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲೆ-ಕಡ್ಡಿಗಳಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದ ತೇಲುವ ಗೂಡು ಕಟ್ಟುತ್ತವೆ.
